A day out in Arundel
Arundel is one of the loveliest historic towns in the South of England — a hilltop tangle of medieval streets crowned by a great castle and a soaring cathedral, with the River Arun winding below and the South Downs all around. It makes a perfect day out, and we like to think a visit to our showroom is part of it.
Things to see and do
Arundel Cathedral
A magnificent French Gothic cathedral on the skyline, free to enter and beautifully serene inside — especially during the famous Corpus Christi carpet of flowers in early summer.
WWT Arundel Wetland Centre
Sixty-five acres of wetland with boardwalks, hides and boat safaris — kingfishers, birds of prey and dragonflies. A gentle, family-friendly couple of hours.
The river & Swanbourne Lake
Stroll along the River Arun or hire a rowing boat at Swanbourne Lake, tucked beneath the castle walls at the edge of the park.
Antiques on Tarrant Street
Arundel is a collector's town. Tarrant Street and the lanes around it are full of antique shops, galleries and independents — ourselves included, just down the hill.
Arundel Lido
The only remaining open-air lido in West Sussex — a heated 25-metre pool for a sunny-day swim, a short walk from the centre.
Where to eat and drink
A few of the town's well-loved spots for lunch, a roast or a riverside pint:
- The Black Rabbit — a much-loved riverside pub on the Arun, with glorious views across the water towards the castle, classic pub food and Sunday roasts. Dog-friendly.
- The George at Burpham — a handsome 18th-century gastropub a short drive out of town, community-owned, with AA Rosette cooking and local ingredients.
- La Campania — a warm, family-run Italian on the High Street, with seasonal specials alongside the classics.
- The White Hart — the friendly pub on the east bank of the river, well placed for food and a drink in the centre of town.
- The Tea and Biscuit Club — just the place for a pot of tea and a slice of cake between the antique shops.
Getting here
Arundel is easy to reach — around an hour and a half by direct train from London Victoria to Arundel station (a ten-minute walk into town), and just off the A27 with parking nearby. It pairs beautifully with the wider West Sussex coast and the South Downs National Park, both on the doorstep.
